Become a Tutor

Are you passionate about teaching and about helping your classmates find success? Apply to join VPTL’s community of subject matter tutors and language conversation partners who help students succeed in some of Stanford’s most challenging courses.

Become a Language Conversation Partner

Language Conversation Partners (LCPs) are Stanford students who help foreign language students practice their conversation skills during one-on-one appointments.  They are selected in a competitive process each Winter Quarter for the following academic year. Undergraduates have priority, but graduate students may apply.

*Applications are closed for the 2017-2018 academic year and will reopen in Winter Quarter 2018 for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Requirements & Benefits


Be a matriculated Stanford undergraduate or graduate student at the time of application (sorry, but incoming students aren't eligible to apply). Priority is given to undergraduates, though the position is also open to graduate students. You will need:

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • A strong commitment to helping peers learn
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, time management, and attention to detail
  • Fluency in the target language: candidates must pass an oral proficiency interview (OPI) with the Stanford Language Center, demonstrating ability to practice conversation with students enrolled in at least the first two years of coursework in the target language.


If you pass the group interview stage, you must also go through a language proficiency interview at the Language Center in the language(s) you wish to tutor.


New LCPs must attend one evening of mandatory training the Friday evening of the first week of classes: Friday, September 29, 2017, 5-8 p.m. Dinner will be provided. (LCPs do not enroll in VPTL 120, the subject tutor training course.)


Post at least five hours per week of availability in our scheduling system.  Students will make one-to-one appointments with you to practice speaking your language.  Scheduling of appointments begin each quarter on the first Sunday after classes commence (in other words, the beginning of week two) and end on the last day of classes. At the beginning of each quarter, make a short (paid) visit to each class you support to introduce yourself.

Language conversation appointments consist primarily of oral conversation practice.  You wouldn't be going over grammar or helping with homework.

All LCPs attend group meetings, typically once or twice per quarter, as scheduled by the Associate Director. They also meet individually with the Associate Director as needed.

Become a Subject Tutor

VPTL subject tutors are trained Stanford students who use their academic expertise on a subject to coach students so that they can succeed on their own after the session. Tutors can provide help through either drop-in sessions or by appointments. 

Appointment Tutors are undergraduates and coterms who provide individual tutoring in one or more of the following courses: Biology, Chemistry, CME, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Human Biology, Math, Physics, and/or Statistics.

Drop-in Tutors are undergraduates and coterms who work in teams to provide drop-in tutoring for selected courses in Organic Chemistry, Math, and/or Physics.

You will need:

  • To be a matriculated Stanford undergraduate or coterm student at the time of application. Incoming students aren't eligible to apply.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA overall, and a minimum grade of A- in the courses you want to tutor.
    *In some cases, tutors may be approved to tutor a course if they have taken identical coursework elsewhere and have taken a higher level course at Stanford.
  • A strong commitment to helping peers learn
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, time management, and have an attention to detail


All new Subject Tutors in 2017-18 must attend a mandatory training day on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, 10 a.m. to 4  p.m. and fenroll in and attend VPTL 120: Peer Tutor Training for 1 unit during Autumn Quarter.

Tutors attend quarterly meetings (scheduled by the Associate Director), team meetings every two or three weeks (scheduled by the team Lead Tutors), and individual meetings as needed.

Tutoring takes place each quarter from the first Sunday after classes begin until the last day of classes (Weeks 2 through 10).

Appointment tutors post at least five hours of availability each week, beginning in Autumn. Tutors are able to list times based on their class schedule.

Drop-in tutors work at least two, two-hour shifts per week, beginning in Autumn. Tutoring occurs Sunday through Thursday in the evening and, for some subjects, on Sunday afternoons. Tutors also provide group support for selected courses by hosting practice exams and review sessions.
